about

"Legend has it that Whippets’ self-titled debut EP, released via Goodbye Boozy during the thick of 2022’s summer, sold out completely in less than a week. The Wisconsin based trio - comprised of Bobby Hussy (The Hussy, Cave Curse, Wristwatch) Tyler Spatz (Cave Curse, Wristwatch), and Hart Alan Miller (Tenement) - are no strangers to the world of DIY punk, but with their latest project they’re blurring the lines and creating their own boundaries, taking equal parts sinewy post-punk and corrosive artistic grunge, and then flipping it all on its head. With a new self-titled full length on the way in June via No Coast Records (Steel Pole Bath Tub, Wristwatch, Red Mass), the band are roaring and raging, creating songs that balance grit and hooks, caustic tonality and relentless energy.

“Toes,” the record’s first single and opening track, a track that’s prodding but undeniably catchy. With elements that recall both The Blind Shake and Dead Moon, there’s a tension based resonance but Whippets opt to play it on the more minimal side. The guitars and bass veer in close company as they push and pull between crunchy riffs and ominous grooves. Hussy’s vocals have a nasal pinch to it but with plenty of bite, a minor howl that burns with an intensity, exploring lyrics that seem to deal with addiction and finding that next fix."

"Ice serves as the second single release from the self-titled first full length by Whippets, expected out on June 7th, 2024 under No Coast Records. The band comprises a powerful trio with Bobby Hussy on guitar and vocals, Tyler Spatz on bass, and Hart Alan Miller on drums.

Ice is a super gritty garage rocker enhanced with psychedelic elements and a grunge rock tone, firmly situating the band's sound within the heavier realm of the underground music spectrum.

Sharp guitars, abundant fuzziness, and pulsating energy, combined with hooky basslines and all around skillful songwriting, culminate in a boldly venturous heavy rock piece. Despite its seemingly monochromatic aesthetic, the song exudes a memorable and multifaceted quality, overflowing with a kaleidoscopic array of sonic features.

Bobby Hussy, known for his work with his band The Hussy alongside Heather Sawyer (Proud Parents, Heather The Jerk), has an extensive musical background, and contributed to bands such as Digital Leather, Cave Curse, Fire Heads, while he currently collaborates with Wristwatch and TIT. Tyler Spatz has also been part of The Hussy as well as of Cave Curse and Yuka Zolo, and presently records and performs with Poney and Wristwatch. Hart Miller has played drums for Tenement, MDC and Wartorn."

"Whether you realize it or not, we’re currently deep in the shoegaze era of, well, everything. I can’t pinpoint exactly where this surge began (was it the return of My Bloody Valentine in 2013? Nothing’s modern classic Guilty of Everything? Something else altogether?), but by any measure, the -gaze tag has now seeped its way into everything extreme, from black and death metal to doom to post-rock and even hardcore. Maybe I’m full of shit and it was here all along, but it seems like it’s pretty much inescapable at this point.

Now, despite the swelling ‘gaze-ification of every genre, what Whippets offer treads outside the waters of anything I’ve come across as of late, which is why I’m especially psyched out of my mind on bringing you the debut of their new single, “Ice,” from their debut self-titled LP,
out May 24 on No Coast Records. Smash dat play button and let’s get into it. There’s something ever-captivating about a psyche-out cold opener like this. Just when you think you’ll be truckin’ along with this rusty razor blade guitar riff, the rhythm section pops in to throw a curveball to get this song onto its proper grungy footing. It’s a hint to the finesse and nuance of their songwriting, which elevate this track beyond spartan garage rock into an almost surfy kind of post-punk loaded with emphatic crashes, hooks, and tasteful-yet-rippin’ leads to send it all home.

Guitarist/vocalist Bobby Hussy’s delivery is as distinctive as they come, coercing ears to the lyrical barbs and indelible melodies, but what seems to make this track utterly chuggable is the keen songsmanship. There’s a real ebb and flow to this track that belies its initial simplicity, where Whippets play with dynamics on every front: sometimes subtly quiet then suddenly melting down amps, playing it straight then tossing in the occasional gnarly little ear-turner in there, or leaning into the abrasive and later rounding things out with tuneful, anthemic leads before an all-too-sudden abrupt close. All this is just a long way of saying it’s worthy of the repeat button.

Anyone into Midwest punk might be picking up on some familiar threads here, and you’re probably right in connecting some dots. This power trio is Wisconsin punk through and through, featuring Bobby Hussy (The Hussy, Wristwatch, TIT), bassist Tyler Spatz (Poney, Wristwatch, This Is the Last Time) and drummer Hart Miller (Tenement, Wartorn). Though this single leans in a decidedly more grungy and post-punk flavor, elsewhere they lock in on jarring noise rock, speed punk, slacker rock, sludge, and so much else with more than a touch of the -gaze. I’ve had the privilege of hearing the record in full, and I say with stupid-dummy confidence that anyone with an interest in angsty post-punk — there are some serious fucking burners on here — will be making room for this on their year-end lists. Do yourself a favor and check it out as it drops on May 24, it’s fucking phenomenal."

"There is a certain joy and freedom when you call a band postpunk or indie rock in that I for a moment, I think I have an inkling what it might sound like, but then reality quickly reminds me that it could mean almost anything from World/Inferno Friendship Society to Oceanator to King in Yellow none of which sound alike but all would fit on an indie list. So with that out of the way, Whippets are a post punk band whose sound somewhere along the lines of themselves though I can tell they are likely fans of Fugazi, Jesus Lizard and GBV which tells you absolutely nothing still. I know. Let me try to narrow it down for you.

The song opens with a bit of a garage rock semi-minimalist guitar riff over some dope in the pocket drums with vocals that have rocker style melody and earnestness both while the bassist ties it all together by providing just the right mix of groove and rock.

Dig how the drumming is just focused on complimenting the music and then around the one minute mark the drummer does this sick ass fill that made me just stop writing the first time I heard it. Hot damn!

Love the guitar solo at the end especially how up front it is in the mix. And the bass and drums lock in tighter than a gerbil’s anus to keep the rockin’ beat that allowed for that killer ending with all the accents.

This rad song and more are on this dope 12” white vinyl"

"hippets, hailing from the No Coast (aka Madison, Wisconsin), are a power trio steeped in a fusion of post-punk, grunge-gaze, and deathrock. The band features Bobby Hussy wielding the guitar and taking on vocal duties, Tyler Spatz on bass, and Hart Alan Miller behind the drums. Their sound channels the raw energy and cutting edge of bands like Wire, Jay Reatard, and Fugazi, mixed with the experimental noise of Jesus Lizard, Metz, and Devo. Adding to their eclectic influences are the likes of A-Frames, Spray Paint, Swell Maps, Unwound, Uranium Club, Spacemen 3, and Christian Death, making their music a complex weave of underground rock’s finest.

Now they unleash Splinter, a deathrock-infused post-punk anthem marked by its angular structure, twangy surf and garage guitar riffs, and a psychedelic flair. The track charges forward with manic ferocity, complete with a killer breakdown.

“Splinter started life as a Cave Curse song a few years back,” says Hussy. “When that band devolved Tyler Spatz and I brought the song over to Whippets and created a whole new life for it. It’s more minimal, immediate and in your face now. We like it like that.”

The DIY video for “Splinter” is a raw cut of visual poetry, featuring found footage that oscillates between flora and fauna in states of birth and decay. Interspersed with expressionistic clips of the band, the imagery gets surreal with giant eyeballs and a big ol’ gator head, feeling like a solid throwback to mid-90s MTV."

"Whippets, the badass power trio from the No Coast, are tearing up stages with their raucous blend of post punk grungegaze. Fronted by the fierce Bobby Hussy on vocals and guitar, backed by Tyler Spatz on bass and Hart Alan Miller on drums, their latest single Toes is a sonic punch to the gut. Mixing the raw aggression of garage rock, the rebellious spirit of 90s grunge, and the gritty edge of post punk, Whippets deliver an adrenaline-fueled onslaught that’s impossible to ignore. Fresh off a killer US tour with DANA, they’re revving up for another cross-country rampage in June 2024, dropping their LP like a sonic grenade. Whippets are here to kick ass and melt faces, so buckle up for the ride of your life!"
